**An ideal book for the Lenten season's reading, this volume is a classical guide to the theory and practice of the virtue--not the Sacrament-- of p, that is, to the attitudes and practices characteristic of true Christian mortification. There is no taint of asceticism for its own sake to be found anywhere in its pages. It is a classical treatise on the subject because of its wholly objective treatment, its perfect balance, which carefully avoids opposite extremes in its theological and psychological analysis and advice, its soundness and complete lack of medicerity, its logical order of presentation and its remarkably clear, direct, , simple and, often, aphoristic style. The author has an exceptional gift for making things clear without oversimplification of thought or excess verbiage. His advice is especially helpful in connection with ungenuise forms of p stemming from erroneous motivations. The emphasis is always on the positive meaning of a ""putting on of Christ"" and as involving giving up something lower for the of something higher. This book should be enthusiastically recommended to all religious, as well as to all Catholic laymen, some of whom are and all of when be profoundly interested in this necessary virtue of penance. This too is a part significant book for Lenten study. Imprimatur.
