CHARLES' GIFT

I found it delightful reading, though I don't believe it will reach a wide market. It's a book for those who love old houses, who like to delve into local traditions, who know and love the Chesapeake Bay section of Maryland. It is a story of a place, the people who built it, the history of the locale, the changes in life and customs -- and the author's own checkered career in connection with it, as he gradually rebuilt the old home and made it his own. Inclusion of actual source material gives this an antiquarian value, but, personally, I liked best the humorous bits about the natives Footner knew in his years at Charles' Gift.
