Hunter Davies wins the dubious achievement award for creating one of the most thoroughly dislikable characters of the year. His Jake Sullivan is the kind who would (and does here) sell out his own mother for starters. He's a filthy mouthed conniver, a hustler who capitalizes on all the angles in his career as a real estate developer. His story is told by one Tom, who knew Jake back in Carlisle when he was the biggest Teddy boy on the block. Now Jake is a twenty-one-year-old millionaire who has outswung Swinging London so he hires Tom as his ""Surprises Assistant"" . . . Tom's job is to come up with pleasant diversions. So Tom is in somewhat of a unique position to chronicle Jake's daily dramas and he captures all the four letter words through two marriages, a brief, unfortunate stint as public benefactor, appearances on TV shows where he becomes the terror of the tube, and the final big deal that falls through and lands Jake in jail. Not to anyone's particular regret.
