The work of a distinctly gifted young modern in a slim volume of highly diversified poems, the first to be published by Hyam Plutzik. Twice he has won the Yale Poetry Prize; he is now teaching at Rochester University. His verse shows unmistakable grasp of poetic forms. His thinking is rationalistic, a little pessimistic, intensely modern. His views are broad and cosmic. He is quite evidently influenced by a rich Jewish background and a varied humanistic education. The one lack in his poems is that of melody, but they compensate by their elegance, satire, conciseness. If this young writer can grow in feeling and general capacity he bids fair to be one of our ranking poets. At the present stage, he is worth watching- though it is unlikely his poems will reach a popular audience.
