by Ianthe Thomas ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 30, 1974
This is all in the words of older Nina, who talks tired Billy Jenkins home from the playground by pretending to take him in a silver sailboat, a smooth-riding plane, and a train, ""as black as midnight coal,"" all shined up proud. Di Grazia, who illustrated Thomas' more lyrical Lordy, Aunt Hattie, does these loving views of black city kids in black and white, but with the same hushed fuzzy softness. Modestly affirmative, though Nina's verbal pictures of the imaginary vehicles aren't particularly evocative.
