by Ira Wolfert ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 15, 1942
Perhaps we are going to get the battle for the Solomons piecemeal, with no chance at overall reporting, no attempt at revealing a pattern. For here -- a last minute arrival, reaching us after copy had been out on Guadalcanal Diary (Page 629) is its team mate. Together, each gives more significance to the other. The Wolfert book is a cloup there's no possible charge of being on the outskirts of battle here. For he describes the battles on the beaches, in the water just off shore, in the air within eight -- grandstand seat throughout. One is less aware of the setting, the feel of the place, the round of life and more aware of sharply defined dramas of incredible battles of sea and air. Wolfert, as well as Tregaskis, strikes the ""small town"" note with his personal references regarding the men he mentions. His style is colloquial, slangy; and he loves his pun.
