From Germany, a very sweet story--about elves and little furry animals--that will seem old-fashioned to many American readers. Small Fur is a cute woodland creature, unhappy because his friend has moved away. After some minor naughtiness (in trouble with Aunt Grouch), he wanders through a green gate and finds an elf weeping: the mean old Nock that lives in the well has snatched one of her wings. Small Fur, overcoming his fear, retrieves the wing from the Nock (who was only looking for a friend), and brings elf and Nock together; the elf lets Small Fur borrow her wings as a reward. But when a new little animal moves in next door and becomes Small Fur's friend, he gives up his ability to go through the magic gate, once more content with life in his own world. Brown pencil sketches, highlighted in red, match the story's feeling. Not a first purchase, but this could be useful where there is a demand for simple stories with reassuring messages, or where there is a large population of young children with unusually good reading skills--but the story's primary appeal will be to younger children, as a read aloud.
