THE DEVIL'S KNEE

The Amboy Dukes have grown older by about eighteen years, and here they are from Brownsville via Mexico to Beverly Hills -- Simon who's been ill off and on and Joyce who's been married on and off and Larry who is his best friend and her best husband to date and the custodian of both of them as well as of Verney, her daughter. Although Verney finds both Larry and Simon like ""more braces in my mouth"" and Joyce finds her impossible (why didn't I use ""Saniflush for a douche"") and actually Verney's a devil to everyone except the devil who would find her ""a monster."" Shulman's the maven of all this particular venue from yuch to schmuck and certainly there are those, higher-minded those, who will find that he's got a fat lip and a dirty mouth. But it is funny at times and even if the story doesn't get really going until the close, it is juiced up with that X-factor he calls the ""jism of living."" You can be sure that's tantamount to a readability jism.
