AN AMERICAN FAMILY

Ishbel Ross is more than adequate to her stupendous task. What can any biographer be expected to do with the Taft family? None of them ever did manage to produce a lively scandal; although they did give the country a President in William Howard Taft and a perennial hopeful in his distinguished senator son. Like the Adams family, the Tafts plugged along from sound stock making good marriages which produced healthy, intelligent children who had the good grace to become outstanding citizens. Philanthropy, education, law and politicis were (and are) the Taft forte. You can't blame the author for concentrating on President Taft and his famous son. Nevertheless, she doesn't scant the rest of an outstanding clan. This book ought to stimulate the buying pulse in Ohio. Readers in the other 49 states will find a focus of interest in the social history as well as the family. Genealogy made readable.
