A biography of one of the last of that solitary race of mountain trappers which is based on a personal contact of some years ago as well as on the many legends this man generated, which derives from affection as well as admiration, and which has all the animation Dobie brings to his books about the southwest. A gentle man, with a philosophical serenity, Ben Lilly was in his early, ebullient years a brutal exterminator-- particularly of bears, but also of panthers, alligators, lions. There are the particulars of his dogs, his knives, his amazing animal lore and powers of sign reading, his markmanship (he was said to have been able to shoot mosquitoes with a .22), his transient marriages, and the honor of becoming Teddy Roosevelt's chief huntsman on one outing... There's a nice quality here for a book which has a natural appeal to sportsmen, or just plain inside followers of the outdoors.
