Phil Tombs, an electrician from (not at) Oxford, is subjected to an assortment of experiences when he wins a quarter of a million pounds in the pools, heads for London and is exposed to a variety of snubs, solicitations and chances. He picks up undergrad Peter, Mark Thickthorne of freakish actions, Mr. Prendick and his alluring niece Jean; he undergoes an indoctrination in off color entertainment by fast working crooks; he gets to see the contrast between the rooted Thickthornes and the snobbism of the Prendick houseparty he is jilted by Jean. And through the Thickthornes he is on his way to making practical use of his money and greater opportunities to extend his education. This progress of an intelligent young worker goes an antic way for a sharp survey of social and financial worlds and has its fun on route.
