Ambrose, a Montana innocent, hits Hollywood in the depressed '30's and gets a job as a cartoonist at the Ricky Rat studios. His boss, Wade Ezekial (sic) Sampson, is ""not a boss in the usual sense of the word. I am more like a god."" But Ambrose doesn't see much of Wade; he flunks the Ricky Rat cuteness test and is reduced to ""Jerky Jack, the Risible Rabbit."" He is also reduced to Darlene, who keeps after him to find a car appropriate for love-making (she hints). He takes a room in an abandoned Hunchback of Notre Dame set, with the obligatory horny landlady, and makes friends with various kooks including a run-of-the-mouth communist and a chap who belongs to a tree cult. One of Wade's instant classics is ""bibbity boo boo,"" a description for a book that strives for satire and stoops to overkill; in other words, so much Mickey Mouse.
