A science-fiction oater is not too wild, and the end of the world forces Lt. Bill Easson to choose ten from a population of 3000 to go with him on a lifeship to Mars. The selection is made, not without violence; the long flight is fouled up by faulty equipment and a fuel shortage; and, once landed, the new colony faces further friction as its conduct is no more civilized than the circumstances in which they find themselves. The lust for power is an ugly threat, but once removed, the survivors face a peaceful future. Human touches clip the wings here and keep this on common ground.
