ACTS OF DARKNESS

A modern novel of the British gentry uses traditional themes and conflicts in which the characters contend openly with evil, their own and others. The triangular love match between arch-egoist Cornelia, agnostic Phillip and divorced huntmaster Singleton provides a fictional montage with enough dark corners to conceal struggles of human baseness and spiritual anemia. Father Garrard, an ascetic priest, tries to reclaim the faithful for the Roman fold and is plagued by his nephew Phillip's intellectual assaults, the hostile quasi-mystics in the parish, and even his own lapses from grace. Although the central plot focuses on Cornelia and Phillip, a large number of their country compatriots are ably characterized and the spectre of lost faith lies beyond them all. Illuminated Catholic thought underlies a story that can stand on its own and, all in all, provides an effective novel.
