THE WORLD OF BEN LIGHTHART

Blinded in a freak accident, Ben Lighthart learns to live with his handicap, in this thoughtful but stiff story. Inspired by a dying hospital roommate Ben tackles braille and walking alone, hoping for a return to high school classes. Old friends help out--former teammates give him a tandem bicycle--but he can no longer enjoy their world. In one of the frequent intrusive comments, ter Haap intones: ""As the other boys went on playing, he redirected his life from all that is physical and visible to all that is spiritual and essential in human existence."" Ultimately, Ben and his parents realize the advantages of a live-in institution. Preachy and un-involving despite its good intentions.
