The story of knighthood is explained simply here with an illustrated look behind the thick stone walls of fortress-castles to see banquets (held without forks), to witness the jousting tourney and a siege against the outer walls. This is a commendable approach to a subject which is of great interest to children in the elementary grades. There is a wealth of helpful explanation in text and diagrammed pictures which explain the weapons of knighthood, the locations of the greatest European castles, and introduction to such figures as King Arthur, Joan of Arc and Richard the III. Boys will be fascinated with the armor, the breech loading bombard, the crossbow, the trebuchet and mangonel while the distaff side will find the pictures of 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th century dress illuminating.
