ABOUT TIME

Finney's main claim to fame is that he wrote Invasion of the Body Snatchers--remember the pod people?--from which two splendid movies emerged. These 12 mild, cozy tales, concerning time travel by supernatural means, have been out of print for more than 20 years; most of them first appeared in magazines of the 1950's and 1960's (some, like Collier's, now long defunct). Five are drawn from the collection The Third Level (""amiable,"" wrote the 1957 Kirkus), and seven from another collection, I Love Galesburg in the Springtime (""pleasant enough,"" declared the 1962 Kirkus). In short, these tales are not the stuff of which permanence is made, though nostalgia buffs will at least want to browse.
