A repeater action tale following the commercial success of The Eagle Has Landed (1975). Here a 19th-century barkentine, the Deutschland, sets sail from the port of Belem in August, 1944 on her way to Kiel some 5000 miles away. Aboard are KapitÄn Eric Berger, his 22-man crew and five Sister of Mercy nuns, all of whom are anxious to return home before the collapse of the Fatherland. The shipboard romance between the courageous bosun Richter and a wavering young novice livens up the crossing until the arrival of a hurricane in the Outer Hebrides. And, believe it or not, the motley group coming to the Deutschland's rescue includes an ancient Scottish coxswain, a female doctor, and a captured German U-boat commander. After The Eagle this is something of a letdown--but then there's the Literary Guild co-selection to launch it alongside the author's name.
