An indirect sympathy and humanity for a rough, graphic inside view of poverty -- and its premium -- of a dead end slum section in New York, and the Slater family who came there after dispossession in the Bronx. Here, with no real guidance from their parents, are Trina, Joe and Danny. First prizefighting for easy money, Joe drifts into less honest practices, becomes a finger man for a gang, is eventually shot. Trina, loved by Dave -- who is civic minded -- and Blackie, who is not, still falls in love with Blackie even knowing that Dave is the better man, marries him, and comes back to Dave only after Blackie is killed -- racketeering. By the author of There Goes Shortly Noggins, this is tough, sometimes tender, and not Public Library material.
