IT'S HALLOWEEN

I saw a ghost/ that stared and stared/ And I stood still/ and acted scared./ But that was just/ a big pretend./ I knew that ghost. . . (new page). . . it was my friend!"" His Nightmares tamed for beginning readers, Prelutsky settles into the spirit of the holiday--reveling in all the fearsome props, obligatory for the occasion, that never really scare anyone over three. Prelutsky's rhythms, too, are milder here--all the better, of course, for easy access, and they're catchy at the most rudimentary level: ""Trick or treat,/ trick or treat,/ give us something/ good to eat. . . . You had better/ do it quick/ or we'll surely/ play a trick. . . ."" With Hafner's playful elaboration on all the domesticated shivers (there's a demons' party, a goblin outside the window), the collection makes a likely warm-up for the big night--and a tempting lead-in to Prelutsky's more devilish entertainments.
