A new collection of short stories are perhaps more accurately sketches- and conversation pieces- in which a predominant number of old timers have their say. In the title story, a stubborn survivor of the early west explains his refusal to give up the land once defended at the cost of a life; a great grandfather, disreputable and unwanted, has a world of memories to leave as a legacy to a youngster; a seasoned hunter stalks a tricky bear which has buffaloed the countryside- but finds he can't squeeze the trigger of the gun which is his only advantage; Nate Bartlett, ""Dealer in Everything"", makes good his country store's slogan and procures a wife for a young maverick; etc., etc. Storywise, not as superior as earlier books, but these ""odd characters"" he likes to collect personalize a fading frontier and have their author's affectionate respect.
