by Jacob -- Illus. Lawrence ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 28, 1970
In a large format volume blaringly red and white and black are eighteen of the most enduring fables -- most confoundingly illustrated. Forms are not only difficult to distinguish but the many structural ambiguities and planar transpositions (from black or red to white) serve no expressive purpose though they do, in many cases, create a dynamic design. Particularly refractory close up, this is not in any case contrived for intimate sharing, and as a large print, large picture spectacle it is not suited either for the solitary reader; but the illustrations do reward as art at a middle distance and their very vitality compels attention -- to themselves, that they may be deciphered, to the tales, economically told, that seem less than usually tried and true.
