by Jacques- Barzun ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 27, 1957
John Jay Chapman was an American essayist in the early part of this century who deserves, according to Barzun, more attention than is generally accorded. His early desire to reform the graft-infested political scene prompted a dozen years of active agitation. But later, ""wishing to remain honest"", he turned to cultural criticism (as opposed to practical politics) feeling that intellect could be a determining social force and that great intellects should not divorce themselves from the contemporary social milieu. Chapman's humor and style are inimitable in their simplicity and frankness. Some of the works included in this volume are the famous am Garrison, Emn, She Quest on D and. Selected thoughts for a selective audience.
