THE SHADOWS OF THE TREES

A limited background book in the story of the Franco-Americans in New England, written by one of them, and based on records, word of mouth and personal experiences. The author is in full sympathy with their adherence to their own way of life -- this ""irreducible element"" who cling to their language, their faith, their inherited traditions, a distinct minority group, found throughout New England wherever there were Canadian migrators. He discusses the survivals in forms and customs, their contributions to the arts, and regrets the inevitability of their decline.
