Presented with fanfare of trumpets -- but I have serious doubts as to the power of the novel to capture the imagination or the interest of the average reader. A tremendously long, wordy, talky-talky German novel, the story of the extended adolescent maunderings of an exceedingly irritating and futile youth. At seventeen he becomes his mother's lover; at twenty-three he murders her with a pair of scissors, and stretches himself and his young wife on the tracks before an oncoming locomotive. And in between, he runs the gamut of despair, morbid introversion, exhiliration, extremes of friendship and hate. Watch your step.
