Within the first pages of this book, Jimmy, its hero, has been hit in the face by an exploding giant firecracker and blinded by serious burns. His recovery is told in a simple, straight from the shoulder narrative that spreads its appeal beyond the limit of subject matter and makes use of character problems to provide a forceful climax. Mike, the boy who threw the firecracker, did it by accident. He is sure no one believes this and the thought injures him almost as much as blindness does Jimmy. There must be months of waiting too, for Jimmy is in no condition to tell Mike that he too knows it was an accident. Before the truth comes out, Jimmy is sent to guide dog school where he and his new dog Pilot become firm friends. Back home, the still resentful Mike torments Pilot in secret to the point where the dog becomes vicious enough to be quarantined. The final determination on Jimmy's part to make up with Mike comes in the nick of time to save Pilot. A naturally dramatic story that adds its note of hope for a happy life.
