Harry Benton, whose ugly grudge against a Colonel has ended in a suspect law practise in Germany, finds his entry permit not renewed, and is asked to escort some diamonds to the U.S. by a criminal, Antonescu. Refusing, he is even more committed when Antonescu is murdered in his house, and, while keeping the diamonds, a car crash prevents his disposition of the body. Harry starts running and reaches his only friend, a secret service man who retrieves him but recruits him for an assignment in the Eastern sector. Ostensibly to secure some papers from kindly Pastor Daubigny, Benton, in whom conscience and pity are for the first time activated, helps Daubigny and his ""niece"", the war-scarred Magda, escape across the border to freedom where the diamonds lead to still another pursuit and flight.... Essentially a thriller, occasionally lurid, this still offers some brutal and virulent excitement.
