An excellent book to follow up the more elementary Yates' book, How to Restore Antiques (Harper), but not a book for the beginner who knows nothing of the use of tools. An introductory chapter gives some valuable hints on things to look for, how to know antiques from fakes by their structure, how to determine what to save, what to restore, what to replace. There's excellent material on equipment, tools, woods, finishes, and so on. He discusses patching and joining, restoring of chairs, tables, chests, bureaus, desks, beds, handles, hinges, fastenings, clocks. The final sections deal with the art of refinishing, including a brief few pages on painting and stencilling.
