Amusing homespun memories of a boyhood in Vermont, terrorized by a stingy Yankee grandfather (a composite Shylock and Clarence Day's famous father) - written with wit and sophistication of an adult looking back. Grandfather was the rich, tight-fisted patriarch of a huge farmhouse, filled with daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, nephews -- and grandmother, with whom grandfather had exchanged no words in the boy's fourteen year old memory. Here was Aunt Rodey who had accidentally lost her fiance by knocking him out; Uncle Luke, the mean uncle, and his son, destined by grandfather to be a doctor because he was good at cleaning chickens, Uncle Clell who precipitated the only spontaneous, drunken party ever staged there when he announced he was going to be an author. Grandfather ruled the tribe with a lusty, mean disposition, and the threat of disinheritance. Gay, colorful, well written- this is way ahead of most books of its genre, and should sell.
