A comic caper of some cutthroats, Congo bound for a dubious deal which involves uranium, manages more than a little humor in its narrative of adventure and misadventure. It is during a stalemate in a small Mediterranean port, and later on the fateful, foreshortened crossing of the S. S. Nyanga, that Bill Dannreuther, a man of ambiguous affairs, and his four backers, meet up with the Chelms who are to foul up their uranium utopia. For Gwendolen Chelm, skittish and romantic and unreliable, falls in love with Dannreuther, while Harry Chelm, landed gentry without land, defends the empire and defies the enterprise in which Dannreuther is engaged. Chelm is killed, all are stranded- and jugged- in Spain, and at the close it is Gwendolen who identifies her loyalties with those of her dead husband and failure follows the fiasco of this attempt... A scuffle with danger which is lighthanded, highhearted.
