RANDOM HARVEST

This is Hilton in his Deeping manner -- and a good story nonetheless, thoroughly readable and well constructed. It is a story of lost identity, the result of shell shock in the last world war, and of a two year gap in the memory of a man who has become a successful industrialist, but whose personal life has remained detached, almost unnaturally unemotional, as he continually seeks for clues to those missing years. We get his story in a series of flashbacks, as one phase after another is revealed to the listener. The story has the element of suspense, of mystery, of romantic interest which makes for popularity. But the story lacks the subtle characterization, the felicity of description that has made his other books distinctive. Good for rentals.
