THE PROUD WOODEN DRUMMER

The Kruss-Rubin Three By Three is a clever construct, the Prelutsky-Rubin treatment of Rudolph Neumann's Bad Bear is witty and spirited, but this--despite an immediate outward resemblance--is stiffly and quite garishly illustrated, and the rhymes are frequently forced. Moreover the story--of a downhearted wooden drummer whose pride is restored by the task of awakening Widow Mouse's sleepyhead children--amounts to little more than a tattoo. Even a wooden drummer would demand a more auspicious assignment.
