A quite different subject from The Lady Is Waiting (1959), this has its themes in loyalty and integrity, for Harry Walker, a worker in a North of England factory whose bomb production is top secret, is betrayed by his past into a dubious present. Trying to escape the memory of the children who were killed in the attempt to assassinate a South American dictator, he is tracked down by specialists in the Party and forced into aiding them get the plans for the bomb. The job doesn't come off; Walker, with the plans, seeks refuge with his ex-wife; young Mary Hibberd, in love with Walker, is used to lure Walker from hiding; Mary's brother, an Inspector, makes the arrest. And another kind of justice -- through the ex-wife -- is the answer for Walker. Political angles as well as personal honesty accompany Walker's attempts to come to terms with himself and the story keeps a purposeful pace.
