Mr. Reynolds wafts us easily from Louisiana bayou to Carson City cat house, from long past to short or present, as he introduces us to frenzied ghosts, gentle ghosts, ghosts saintly and sinful, bawdy and sedate. It is a varied troop:-the sweet lost fiancee of the white lilacs; the jewel thief who used her midget stature to carry loot home in her doll; the tragic pieta madonna of the Ozarks; the skating sisters of Central Park; the murderous plantation mistress; the woman who survived numerous murder attempts; Mad Anthony Wayne; Flora Sommerton of Nob Hill; Trouble Maker, a great horse who frisks at the jump he missed; and many others. The weaver spins with grace, at times more fully, at times less so.
