CAPTAIN LITTLE AX

A might-be-true facet of the Civil War, which James Street has made very credible, has to do with the Cradle Company and Little Ax Trowbridge, under age and under size, who captained it. But his spirit and military school training made up for the lacks. Under fire now, and accepting from his dying father the charge to keep the Trowbridge name bright, Little Ax forms the Cradle Company from a group of restless, resentful youngsters who foraged for themselves, kept out of reach and made their contributions again and again. It makes a fascinating story. One gets to know the members and to sense Little Ax's uncanny ability and there are new angles on the operation from the Confederate side. Refreshingly original.
