When the author, a renowned Polish physician, teacher and writer, asked a small boy in an orphanage what he would like to be and the child answered, ""I'd like to be a King and rule the world"", Janues Koresak wrote this story to show that it was not easy to be a King. Matthew might be any small boy in any small country. When his father dies, although he can neither read nor write, he is proclaimed King. How Matthew fights his Ministers, introduces reform for the children, goes (incognito) to war, visits a ruler, sends grown-ups to school and lets the children do the work and earn the money, upsets intrigue and catches spies, makes fascinating reading for young and old, and indirectly illustrates his point. A strange and delightful humor runs through. The illustrations by Irene Lorentowlon are in black and white and catch the quality of the story.
