RABBITS ON ROLLER SKATES!

Wahl has written a pleasant, simple, rhymed text, but it is Allender's watercolors (and humorous approach) that make this book so special. ""Here they come!/Here they come!"" reads the opening page, and the tips of four pairs of rabbit ears can be seen over a pale green hill. These are the rabbits on roller skates, who bump into a man carrying a bag of groceries. The bunnies steal his red hat (one of them puts it on), and the surprised fellow runs into town to alert the police. Meanwhile, the rabbits make their way down a steep hill and into the ocean (""Dipping, slipping/Dashing, splashing"") as five police officers set out with butterfly nets to catch them. Suddenly there are nine rabbits, and they have matched both the nets and the policemen's caps. The rabbits eventually roll right into a hall in which a roller-skating contest is taking place, and roll out with the first-prize trophy, which they leave with their victim, the man with the groceries, who happens to be passing by. He even gets his hat back. If there is anyone who hasn't already lost his or her heart to the feisty rabbits (especially the tiniest one, hardly bigger than a squiggle), the last illustration will do the trick: nine rabbits are curled up asleep under some trees, their skates hanging from the branches.
