From slavery in South Carolina to freedom near Philadelphia as two brothers travel the underground railroad. Perky, quick-witted, perceptive, Amos (twelve) and Obadiah (nine) are helped by good folk, black and white alike. There are harsh moments -- a white man's ingratitude, the cruel shooting of a fellow traveler -- and funny times and several affectionate gestures (especially from Obadiah). It's better than many of this sort because the boys are boys and not proclamations but they are precocious -- almost polished half-way along -- and there are incongruities (""We promised to write to each other as soon as I learned to write."")
