LULU AND THE WITCH BABY

A run-of-the-mill sibling rivalry story taking place in a family that happens to be composed of witches. The events are calculated to enthrall beginning readers: baby gets away with behavior outgrown by Lulu; Lulu tries to get even by making baby disappear during Mama's absence; magic potion is nicely gruesome; baby seems to disappear, but by the time Lulu's conscience whimpers, he's reappeared, safe and sound, to receive new affection from his erring sister. McCully's comic pencil sketches spiked with hot pink and gold equip the witches' domicile with plenty of witchy paraphernalia. O'Connor's text reads smoothly and deals sensibly with family dynamics common to witches and other people.
