THE LION AND THE ROSE

Mary Queen of Scots is a wellnigh universal favorite, a heroine to most teen agers. Here's another version of her romantic and tragic story, in which Miss Oliver takes the position that Darnley was the instigator as well as the victim of the gunpowder plot. Her story opens as Mary intercedes with Elizabeth for Bothwell, at the very time when she is falling victim to Darnley's external charms, and marrying him in secret. It goes through the unhappy marriage, the degrading quarrels, the growing power of her enemies, and finally with the murder of Rizzio, the recoil from Darnley, and turning again to Bothwell. A story told with warmth and grace.
