ASPEN GOLD

More spandex romance in a swishy setting from the author of the popular Calder series and others. This time out, Dailey writes about a local Aspen, Colorado, girl, Kit Masters, who's been living in Hollywood for the last ten years, hammering away at the cast-iron doors to success. But when she lands a lead in her first picture--making her, as her sexy boyfriend and costar, John Travis, puts it, ""an actress shooting to the top""--she flits back to Aspen, the snowy backdrop for the film. There, she decides to sell her late father's 4,000-acre ranch, though her neighbor Tom Bannon (with ""a face like the mountains, full of crags and hard surfaces"") opposes the idea, since a sale will bring ugly development to the area. Prod Kit can't quite ignore Bannon, because he was her first love--never mind the fact that he broke her heart when he married the ""beautiful and tempestuous"" Diana, who died some years back under mysterious circumstances. In fact, it takes only one roll in the sack with Bannon for Kit to realize that John Travis's moviola world isn't for her. And Bannon feels likewise--which would put a capper on things were it not for his sister-in-law, Sondra, a real-estate tycoon who loves him a little too madly, which is why she visits Kit with a hypodermic needle brimming with lethal drugs. Sondra doesn't get her way, of course, though her efforts to do Kit in will provide a thimbleful of excitement in this otherwise drearily formulaic exercise. Still, given the persistent force of the author's moniker, fans are sure to follow Dailey to Aspen, even if all they find there is some very grainy snow.
