What is probably the definitive edition of the ""first American classic"", the present edition is based on all the Woolman manuscripts extant, and is more complete than the better known Everyman Edition, edited by John Greenleaf Whittier (which omits Chapter 10 and other small passages). This is a beautifully written memoir of a mid-18th century New Jersey Quaker, who recorded little of his private life, but much about his Quaker work, his religious travels, both about this country and in England, and his ceaseless effort to convince his countrymen about the evils of slavery. Both for beauty of language and for context, it can be recommended to lay readers as well as to students of American literature. The editor, Janet Whitney, who contributes an informative introduction, is also author of JOHN WOOLMAN, AMERICAN QUAKER.
