Quasi-feminist, amateur shamus Anna Peters (The Big Payoff, 1976), who'd rather just do her Research Department work at New World Oil, is discreetly dispatched to Paris to retrieve lovely Crystal Blythe, heir (along with lovely twin brother Edward) to millions and millions. Crystal's been hanging about with Gaby Celestin, a poet with Maoist leanings, so the sight-scenic route (beaucoup de Metro rides) ropes in the CIA along with the beautiful-people and Left-Bank ambiances. Anna's a ballsy enough narrator, and her roommate Harry fills his reversed role without excess cuteness, but no matter how ""chicly"" the action is attired, it's as obvious and linear and droopy as the sort of housedress that Anna would never be caught wearing.
