A teen-ager puts his life on the line to prove that his mother did not commit a murder, in this new hi-lo thriller from a popular author. Jason's mother has spent eight years in a Florida jail for the killing of her lover, wealthy businessman Arthur Madison. Now, however, the final appeal has failed, and the date for her execution is set. Jason is sure that she's innocent, but everyone else, even the lawyer who's pleaded her case so doggedly, thinks otherwise. Then comes a call from Frank Morgan, a police captain dying of cancer, who has gathered and hidden evidence that Madison was killed for gambling debts by powerful, ruthless men. If Jason can collect that evidence, and escape those men, he can save his mother. . . Sentence fragments, bare snippets of description, and monosyllabic dialogue give the impression of a story stripped to its essentials; in fact, there are several irrelevant characters and encounters, and the plot stalls occasionally. Jason is captured, escapes, and delivers the evidence only hours before the scheduled execution. The steady repetition of words and phrases gives this rather thin story a dramatic beat: high marks for technique, low for content.
