This story about truck drivers in an emergency and one truck in particular is proof of the fact that unpretentious and straightforward realism is a natural part of a beginning reader's library. Bill who owns run-down Susie is just a little sorry for himself when he sees Slim's big, shiny trailer outfit. Through the day, Bill's chores are the ordinary things- delivering a calf, ice cream for a party, hauling a fallen tree off a storm washed road-and Susie accomplishes them all. But at night, when the storm has disabled Slim's trailer, Bill and Susie have their biggest chance and deliver the trailer's cargo of strawberries to the city. The author's blue, yellow and grey wash drawings- of the men in the diner, the trucks on the road- are as actual as life.
