ULL NUMBER 737

Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island, is the setting for this story about an ornithologist's family. Sixteen-year-old Luke holds the egg, as Sea Gull 737 pocks his way to birth. Startled by a jet, the boy drops Spacecraft, as he calls the bird, within a few moments of hatching. Thereafter, the gull's fear response to the noise of jets gives Luke an idea for a National Science Foundation project as scientist try to remove flocks of birds nesting around airports. Birds had been found responsible for jet crashes as they were sucked into the engines. There is considerable ooling for the routine, discipline and scientific method of research as well as the establishment of the practical values to be found in pure research. While the characters look dimension, the plot is timely, the content unusual and may be of some interest to the fledgling scientist.
