THE PIZZA PIE SLUGGER

Convinced that he's being jinxed by his half-sister, Billy fights a batting slump in this sports-cum-family story. Billy hopes to be the hero who propels his team, Castle Pizza, to the local championship, but his ""super-duper power swing"" isn't working, thanks (he believes) to 18-month-old Lily's distracting sideline babble. When he visits his mother and her new husband on Sundays, Billy generally enjoys Lily's company, just as he enjoys living and working with his father and grandfather at the pizzeria--so it's really only a matter of time before he becomes accustomed to Lily's chatter; fortunately, his equanimity and swing return in time for the Big Game, which he wins with a grand slam. Billy's family situation adds an unusual dimension to this otherwise tried-and-true plot. Sims' many calm, pale drawings add a pleasant note.
