THE MONDAY HORSES

Already blessed with a horse of her own, an Arabian named Toby, Cassie lands a job at a horse trainer's when Toby is hurt on a nearby path and taken in for emergency boarding. When they're not working, Foxfire's young, committed staff spends its time bemoaning the practices of their charges' rich owners--foolish buying and selling, pressuring their children to win ribbons, neglecting and drugging their horses. Cassie herself begins riding in shows for a pony owner whose less competitive granddaughter, in turn, takes care of Toby--and Cassie lands in the hospital because their horse has been drugged by another trainer. Till then what incidents do occur seem to transpire offstage, with the spotlight on all those humane staff conversations. Their concerned, can't-fool-me horse talk is naturally rendered and just forthcoming enough with pony-class dirt to occupy readers who dream of having Cassie's opportunities; but there's neither excitement nor the hint of an off-course subplot for others.
