Ginny doesn't fall in love with skinny, filthy Mokey at first sight nor does the pair go on to blue ribbon fame. But because Mokey is the only pony available for summer rental, Ginny scrubs and feeds and nurses and trains her, makes friends through her with neighbor Pam who also rides (and with Pam's stable man who gives her tips and encouragement), and even wins third prize in her class at a local show though she feels that both she and Mokey are a little out of place there. Of course Dad gives in and buys Mokey at the end of the summer, and this is nothing more enduring than a girl-horse summer romance, but the relative restraint in incident and naturalness of telling puts it a neck or so ahead of the Farley/Anderson/etc. herd.
