Written from inside knowledge of the mechanics of the Mormon Church, its discipline, point of view, organizations, this is the story of three generations in relation to the church, which has now become an empty shell of superstition. The father who sacrificed his wife to his fanatical beliefs, the daughter who married within the Church but broke away from its tenets, and her daughter whom she tries to force out into the world rather than sacrifice her to a marriage caught in the shackles of Mormon beliefs, these are the main strands of the story. The situations have plenty of interest and present real conflicts, but their development is slowed down by long discussions in the author's obvious endeavor to show up all the facets of the Church. Pretty tedious, when all is said and done.
